PORTLAND- Campaigns for many of Oregon’s incumbent congressional candidates are drawing a majority of their funds from out of state rather than in-state donors.
Half of Oregon’s congressional candidates facing re-election in November draw over 50% of campaign funding from out of state donors according to OpenSecrets.org, a website that tracks Congressional elections and campaign contributions.
Democratic Senator Ron Wyden’s campaign gets 65% of its funding from out of state, primarily New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
“If you are looking to represent a state, the majority of the money you are earning from contributions should come from that state, otherwise you lack integrity,” said Wyden’s Libertarian opponent, Marc Delphine.
Sen. Wyden’s campaign declined to comment.
Rep. David Wu, D, represents Oregon’s first Congressional District including Washington and Yamhill counties as well as the north coast. His campaign’s war chest is composed of 66% out of state donors. These donors come primarily from New York, San Jose, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
“Congressman Wu has a number of supporters in his district, across Oregon, and throughout the country,” said Julia Krahe, spokeswoman for the Wu campaign. “But his number one priority is representing his constituents.”
Fifty-one percent of the war chest for Rep. Peter DeFazio’s campaign is from similar places mentioned above including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Elkhart-Goshen in Indiana.
Those candidates whose contributions did not come mostly from out of state sources include Rep. Greg Walden, R-Medford, Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Portland, and Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-Canby. Walden and Schrader have less than 20% out of state contributions while Blumenauer has 47% out of state contributions coming from Washington, DC, Oakland, Chicago, and New York.
UPDATE: This note is given at the bottom of the in state vs. out of state data table on OpenSecrets.org. “As a general rule, incumbents get more out-of-state money than challengers, a reflection of their status as members of Congress and the wider circles in which they travel. Challengers and newcomers are rarely well known outside their state, so their ability to raise funds beyond their district is more limited.” Also, OpenSecrets.org updates their data monthly and may not reflect the most up to date data from campaigns.

Rob Cornilles has received close to $400,000 all from local donors. His local donor list has eclipsed 1000 seperate donors. The questionable aspect of David Wu is that he receives copious donations from out of state companies and unions that are competing for Oregon stimulus contracts. David Wu is the poster boy of earmarks all on deficit spending. He is ranked 30th in earmarks on deficit spending.
David Wu takes out of state donations from unions and special interest so they can profit from deficit spending directed at Oregon?
David Wu votes for the 25% increase in government while hard revenue remains at 75% of the George Bush years ($2.7 trillion versus $2.2 trillion)! David Wu votes to increase government from $3.1 trillion to over $4.0 trillion in one year. David Wu votes to increase war ops tempo from $130 billion to $200 billion. David Wu votes to increase the debt ceiling from $9 trillion under Bush to $14.3 trillion under Obama in less than 18 months. After spending close to 5 trillion hard federal revenue has has only increased $150 billion ($2.054 to $2.2 trillion) since federal budget year 2009.
David Wu believes Joe Biden when Joe Biden states, “it is patriotic to pay taxes” while they seek to raise taxes on the so-called rich by 33%!
Obama escorts Ted Kennedy into the chamber and considers himself Kennedyesque while raising taxes:
Repeal Bush Tax cut 2%
War Tax 2%
Rich tax 2%
Oregon rich tax 2%
Medicare levie 3.8%
Capital gains on residential property 25 percent
Capital gains
55% death tax.
David Wu votes 100 percent along party lines to chain our children to the socialist loom. He does not share our western ideals. David Wu only believes in the ideals of control and servitude.
David Wu does not share our beliefs in limited government and unlimited opportunity.
He is still a control freak like when he was in college with that CO-Ed when he placed a pillow over her face to muffle the screams while he tried to have his way with her. Now he uses union money, special interest money and the yellow press to muffle the screams while he tries to have his way with our children’s futures.
History repeats
David Wu supports using deficit spending to bailout mortages instead of empowering seniors and families and allowing our seniors to use 401k proceeds without penalties to pay off mortgages.
I may only have $300,000 cash on hand to defeat David Wu, but I do have the “Liberty Racer”

Wu doesn’t represent the people of his district he represents the money of out-of-state special interests.
We all know the problem. We have incumbents that are entrenched and it’s obvious by the numbers that Wu doesn’t represent properly, nor is he supported by, the people of his district. Wu is a non-representing representative who represents out-of-state special interests more than the people of his district. This is supposed to be the people’s house, not bought and sold by PAC’s and unions.
Wu also uses franking privileges to spend millions of dollars for campaign flyers disguised as constituent communications. When you combine his taxpayer funded franking abuses with out-of-state funding the numbers are even worse.
